Haircare Guide for Strong, Healthy Hair.
At LS HAIR STUDIO, results don’t end when you leave the chair. How you prepare for your appointment and care for your hair afterward plays a key role in maintaining colour, condition, and overall hair health.
This guide outlines how to prepare for your appointment, care for your hair after your service, and maintain strong, glossy, healthy hair long-term.
Before Your Appointment.
ARRIVING PREPARED
To ensure the best experience, we ask that you arrive on time so your appointment can begin as scheduled.
Please arrive with clean, dry hair unless otherwise advised for your service. Clean hair allows for more accurate colour application, better product absorption, and more consistent results.
Avoid heavy styling products, oils, or build-up prior to your appointment, as these can affect how colour and treatments perform.
After Your Colour Service.
WHEN TO WASH YOUR HAIR
If your appointment includes colour services, we recommend waiting 48–72 hours before washing your hair.
When colouring hair, the cuticle (outer layer of the hair) is lifted to allow colour to penetrate the hair. After your service, the cuticle remains open and does not snap close immediately. Inside the hair, colour molecules continue to oxidise and bind, and this process continues even after you have left the studio. It takes time for the cuticle to fully settle, reseal and lock in the colour.
Washing your hair too soon can disrupt this process, causing pigment to rinse out prematurely. This results in fading, reduced depth, dullness, and tone shifting (particularly in lighter shades). It also leaves the hair more vulnerable to dryness, breakage, and long-term damage.
Allowing 48–72 hours before your next hair wash gives the cuticle time to fully close, helping the hair retain colour pigments, improve tone longevity, and support moisture retention, strength, and overall hair health.
Shampoo & Conditioner. What to use.
WHY SULPHATE-FREE AND PH-BALANCED PRODUCTS MATTER
Sulphates are strong cleansing agents commonly found in shampoos (such as Sodium Lauryl Sulfate and Sodium Laureth Sulfate). While effective at removing oil and buildup, they can be overly harsh on both the hair and scalp.
Frequent use of sulphates can strip away natural oils, disrupt the scalp’s pH balance, and leave the hair dry, frizzy, and more prone to breakage.
Hair and scalp naturally sit at a slightly acidic pH (around 4.5–5.5). Using harsh or unbalanced products can disturb this environment, causing the cuticle to lift and making the hair more porous and vulnerable to damage.
For coloured hair, sulphates can also accelerate fading by removing colour pigments prematurely.
For these reasons, we recommend using gentle, sulphate-free and pH-balanced products to maintain both hair health and colour longevity.
Healthy hair relies on a balance of strength, moisture, and protection. Choosing the right ingredients can significantly improve the condition, shine, and overall hair health.
Ingredients To Look For.
NATURAL OILS (ARGAN OIL, JOJOBA OIL)
These nourish and smooth the hair, helping to seal the cuticle, enhance shine, and maintain moisture balance.
A humectant that attracts and retains moisture within the hair, improving softness, elasticity, and manageability.
PANTHENOL (VITAMIN B5)
These help strengthen the hair by reinforcing weakened areas along the strand. They improve structure, reduce breakage, and support long-term hair health.
HYDROLYSED PROTEINS (KERATIN, SILK, WHEAT)
GLYCERIN
Draws moisture into the hair and helps maintain hydration, particularly beneficial for dry or dehydrated hair types.
Support the internal structure of the hair, helping to repair damage and maintain strength over time.
AMINO ACIDS
Certain ingredients can negatively impact hair condition, particularly when used frequently or in high concentrations.
Ingredients To Avoid.
SULPHATES (SLS, SLES)
Can strip natural oils, disrupt the scalp’s pH balance, and lead to dryness, irritation, and faster colour fading.
HEAVY SILICONES (NON-WATER-SOLUBLE)
While they can create temporary smoothness and shine, they may build up on the hair, weighing it down and preventing moisture from penetrating the hair shaft.
DRYING ALCOHOLS (ETHANOL, ISOPROPYL ALCOHOL)
These evaporate moisture from the hair, leaving it dry, brittle, and more prone to frizz and breakage over time.
PARABENS
Used as preservatives, parabens are generally safe in low concentrations but may cause irritation for some individuals with sensitive scalps.
Sun Exposure & Colour Fading.
Sun exposure can affect both natural and coloured hair.
UV rays can break down colour molecules, leading to fading, dryness, and dullness. Lighter shades and toned hair are particularly vulnerable to changes in tone when exposed to prolonged sunlight.
To protect your hair:
Wear a hat during extended sun exposure
Use UV-protectant hair products
Be mindful of sun exposure immediately after colour services
Strong, glossy, healthy hair reflects light more effectively, holds colour longer, and feels smoother and more resilient.
To maintain long-term hair health:
Wash your hair 2–3 times per week to preserve natural oils
Use professional-quality, balanced formulations
Minimise excessive heat styling and always use heat protection
Maintain regular trims to prevent split ends
Consistency in your routine will have the greatest impact on the strength, condition, and overall hair quality.
Maintaining Strong, Healthy Hair.
Maintaining your hair between appointments is essential for preserving both colour and overall hair health.
Environmental factors, product choices, and daily habits all influence how your hair looks and feels over time. A consistent routine tailored to your hair type will help maintain strength, shine, and manageability between visits.
If you are unsure which products or routine are best suited to your hair, we are always happy to guide you.
We look forward to helping you maintain strong, glossy, healthy hair between visits at LS HAIR STUDIO.
